It can be incredibly difficult to lose weight. Many factors can complicate the process, too, including age, gender, pregnancy, and more. Some of these cannot be changed – you can’t roll back the hands of time, for instance. However, some can be changed. If you’re making any of the six mistakes we discuss below, now’s your chance to make a change for the better.
- Looking at the Numbers
Ok, so this one isn’t so much a mistake as it is a question of focus. You do need to glance at the scale from time to time. However, don’t let that be your sole indicator of weight loss. Remember that muscle tissue weighs more than fat, so it’s entirely possible to burn fat and actually not lose weight. Instead of focusing on the scale, look at how your clothing fits and how your body looks.
- Miscalculating Your Calories
Achieving general weight loss requires that you burn more calories than you take in. However, that can lead to an imbalance – dramatically reduced caloric intakes coupled with high energy output. Over time, that can lead to serious injuries and negative health conditions. Instead, go for a more gradual reduction in calories so that you’re still able to give your body the fuel it needs to perform.
- Overexercising
While exercise is a critical part of your weight loss journey, it’s entirely possible to overdo it. Too much exercise does you no good. In fact, it can harm you. It’s all too easy to end up injured, and then you’re forced to sit out and heal. During that time, the weight you lost will come piling back, and your progress will be lost. Always opt for a gentle increase in physical activity to give your body a chance to adjust, and make time for downtime every week.
- Skipping Weights
You might say that you want to focus on running, or that you don’t want to get “bulky,” but those excuses for skipping weights and resistance training are going to short-circuit your results. Why? Muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue. So, the more muscle you have on your frame, the more calories you’ll burn pound for pound. If you want to lose weight, building muscle is a must.
- Eating Low-Fat Food
If you’re striving for general weight loss, chances are good that you’re going to gravitate toward diet food. That is, food that’s marketed as being low-fat. Don’t do it. Many of these products include a ton of sugar added to replace the lost fat and add flavor back. Even milk can contain a lot of added sugar (think fat-free chocolate milk). Sugar does your body no good and increases your chances of developing diseases like type 2 diabetes.
