Memory loss is one of the most difficult and tragic parts of getting older. While not everyone will suffer severe memory loss, for families with a loved one experiencing Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias, they know how difficult it can be to watch a family member slowly forget everyday details. Having to remind your parents of your name is both painful and worrying. Fortunately, dementia, and particularly Alzheimer’s disease, have received a lot of attention within the field of medical research.
Whereas just a few decades ago, there weren’t many options available for Alzheimer’s patients; these days, there are at least three big-name brands offering medicine to slow and treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. Doctors are still unsure how these medicines work precisely, but they believe that they slow the rate of decay in acetylcholine. This brain chemical plays an important role in both memory and cognition. Within acetylcholine, the brain can no longer store or access old memories, and Alzheimer’s and dementia begin to set in.
Other drugs help by preventing amyloid plaques from building up in the brain. This is one of the tell-tale signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Amyloid plaques are globules of protein that build-up into a layer between neurons, preventing them from functioning properly. Doctors do not yet understand what causes amyloid plaques to develop so aggressively. Still, they do know that preventing them can help slow or even reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
One potential drug looking to treat Alzheimer’s disease is Cerebrolysin. Cerebrolysin is a peptide synthesized from the brains of pigs. It has been shown to help increase neurotrophic regulation or the regrowth of damaged brain tissue. It has been used to treat several different neurological diseases such as stroke, traumatic injury, cognitive decline, and even dementia. While it is still undergoing research, there have been several promising studies linking Cerebrolysin to improved outcomes among patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
When taken by patients not experiencing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, Cerebrolysin can help boost motor and cognitive abilities. Because it helps the brain to regenerate, taking Cerebrolysin can speed up how quickly its users learn new tasks or form memories. This makes it a prime candidate for patients who have undergone traumatic brain injuries or stroke. Taking Cerebrolysin helps to protect traumatized neurons from further damage while also repairing them.
If you believe you or a loved one could benefit from taking Cerebrolysin, we recommend speaking to your doctor. It is currently only available as an injection though it can be added to an IV. Cerebrolysin should be dosed based on the patient’s condition. Generally speaking, victims of traumatic brain injury, stroke, or Alzheimer’s disease will receive a higher dose than someone with a more common form of dementia. Treatment duration will also vary based on the patient’s condition. This is why we highly recommend speaking with your doctor before starting a new medication.
Although doctors and researchers are still studying how Cerebrolysin affects the brain, it has been approved for use as an Alzheimer’s medication in Germany, South Korea, Austria, China, and Russia. It is also currently undergoing FDA approval in the United States.
As anyone with a family member suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease knows, researchers continue to study and develop new cures every day. As scientists and foundations pour more resources into research, more and more options will continue to pop up. Until a final treatment can be isolated, Cerebrolysin is one option to keep your eye on.
